Barbecue Sauce For The Starving College Student

When most of us look back on our college days we do so with nostalgia, remembering the good times, social events, and even the educational experience holds great value in ones mind. But what is not missed about college is, you guessed, how poor you were. Those days of getting creative in the kitchen on a shoe-string budget made for some of the most outstanding Top Ramen dishes. And when you had a barbecue with your friends, you were grateful to have a two dollar barbecue sauce bottle to sparingly use on your meat to make it stretch for an army of twenty.

Yes, the starving student days for you may be long over, but the memories of your creative chef days on a budget keep a permanent imprint in your mind as one of the most laughed about and talked about general experience of being a student.

However, if you are still punching out those papers and tests, holding down a part time job that barely pays for your room in a house occupied by seven of you, and trying to make a penny stretch a mile for that painful trip to the grocery store, there is some good news as to how you can create a gourmet style barbecue sauce and cooking experience without having to sacrifice your rent payment.

The Summer Barbecue Sauce Bet

A young man was walking by a slightly seedy looking cafe, when he noticed a sign in the window offering a free dinner. A genuine dinner was an event our hero hadn't took part in for a particularly long time, so in he went, found the boss, and requested the publicized free meal.

The chief explained, with a grin, that there was a bet involved. First our man had to drink a bottle of very spicy barbecue sauce. Next, there had been an alligator in the back room with a bad tooth, which he must remove, and eventually, he'd have to apply two coats of nail polish, to the waitress's toes.

The child grabbed the can of barbecue sauce, drank it right down, and proceeded to the back room. There was thumping, banging, scratching, and a scream or 2. Just when you assumed it could not go on any longer, the kid appeared from the back room, his clothes ripped, his hands bloody. He went direct to the counter, asked for another jar of that barbecue sauce, drank each drop, and returned to the back room. This time, the noise was incredible. If you can imagine what it might sound like if a semi van drove through a china shop and into a pet store, you would be getting near to the awful racket exiting that room.

It The Barbecue Sauce That Made Me Fall In Love

Mick was a hardworking single guy in his mid-thirties. Each day he got up at 6:45 AM, showered, had some serial and went to work. He would return at 5:35 PM, microwave a dinner, watch TV, and be in bed by 9. On weekends he would sleep precisely 1 hour longer in the morning, eat, shower, and catch the train to visit his mother, who lived about 100 miles away.

It occurred at work. He hadn't tasted anything like it, and was hooked immediately. He asked her where she got the wings, and she told him about the tiny cafe around the corner, that specialised in all things grilled. That night, after work, rather than going home to his microwave and television, Mick went to that cafeteria, and treated himself to the best dinner he ever ate, and took home an extra serving of Louisiana barbecue sauce.

Bad Luck And Barbecue Sauce

My oldest child recently bought his first automobile. It was an old car, but it was inexpensive, and it ran. We took the car to Larry's, the local technician. Larry was a bit eccentric, all technicians are, but he could fix anything automotive, and had the only garage I had ever been in that smelled like barbecue sauce. Larry liked autos and food, and had a genuine talent for all things barbecue, his barbecue sauce was famous in our city, and I believe Larry got a large amount of additional business because of it.

Not bad, he claimed with a smile, If you let me have it for a few hours, I'll clean it up a bit for you. Get yourself some of that barbecue sauce in the back, take it home and put it on something good for lunch, and by the time you're done, your car will be too.

We went home, cooked some burgers, with Larry's bbq sauce, of course, and by the time we got back to the garage, the car was ready. What a transformation! It didn't chug anymore, it purred. The radio worked, the windows went up and down, the heater heated, the windshield wipers
wiped the windshield, all the systems my boy had ignored when he acquired the poor old thing, were now operational. That wasn't all.

The Barbecue In Barbecue Sauce What Is It?

Barbecue really took hold in the American South in the 19th century. Pork was the meat of choice because the pigs did not need to be tended on a farm but were allowed to run free and semi-wild. There were economic advantages to this since there was no need to feed them but they were more or less readily available for consumption as needed. Though they would have tougher and stringier meat than their corn-fed cousins, anybody who knew how to barbecue could remedy this through the slow cooking method which made virtually any meat tasty enough to eat along with barbecue sauce.

As the technique of barbecue spread throughout the south different versions of barbecue sauce recipes and sometimes different meats became popular in certain locations, but pork was still the most prevalent. The prime exceptions to this are Kentucky and its mutton and Texas' love affair with beef. Let's start where barbecue sauce had its beginning: the eastern US. In North Carolina the type of sauce you cook with depends upon what part of the state you live in. In eastern Carolina you will find a very peppery, vinegar-based sauce, while in the area to west of Raleigh there will be a similar version chock full of tomatoes. The self-styled "Barbecue Capitol of the World," Lexington, NC boasts one barbecue restaurant per thousand residents. Wow! That is a lot of barbecue!

Barbecue Sauce And The Blues

Back in the sixties, I was a disc jockey on an FM radio station. At that time, FM was not a big deal, and most station owners were looking for shows that would make money, and that's how underground, or free form radio got started. Anyway, I tried as hard as I could to find new and unusual music that couldn't be heard on mainstream radio, including old blues records, which at that time were influencing a generation of English musicians. My late night show was the only one in town playing real American blues, and I picked up quite a following. It became so successful, a local promoter arranged a blues concert featuring the musicians whose albums I played every night.

The day of the concert, the promoter called, and asked me to join him and the stars of the upcoming show for lunch. I was pretty nervous, even more so after introductions. My musical heroes were a bunch of tough, older black men who had pretty much done anything and everything there was to do in life, and I was a skinny, long haired kid from the suburbs. They were polite, and distant. They pretty much ignored me, as they resumed their conversation about, of all things, barbecue sauce. They all lived in Chicago, where they said good barbecue sauce
was as easy to find as bad luck.

Endless Barbecue Sauce It's An American Dream

As American as the concept of a big cookout called a barbecue might be, the word is not even an English word, but comes from a group of Caribbean Indians that dried their meat on a high wooden platform. Nowadays, most people used the shortened form of 'bbq' to describe this wonderful cooking party. As concepts started to take shape along this avenue of types of cooking this is where barbecue sauce started to make a name for itself. This is where trends started to take shape.

So much a part of the American scene, it seems like every region has its own style of barbecue and everyone has their own homemade barbecue sauce recipe. That is because the sauce is really the center of the cooking. It does not matter what kind of meat that you grill, it is the sauce that gives the food its special flavor. In certain parts of the country, especially in the southwest, a homemade barbecue sauce recipe becomes almost like a family secret or heirloom handed down from generation to generation.

Vinegar Based Barbecue Sauce 2009

Lots of sauces have a combination of vinegar and tomato as a base. If we cut out everything but the vinegar, that takes us all the way to North Carolina (actually eastern North Carolina). This is the home of the vinegar based barbecue sauce.

From there, BBQ sauce recipes have less vinegar and more additional ingredients the farther away you travel (all the way to back to Kansas City, where they use very little or no vinegar). If we tried to create a map of the United States showing the location of all the styles of BBQ sauce, with all of the regional and local variations, it would look like a 1600s map of Indian tribes with all their associated bands. There would be hundreds of them (maybe more).

Barbecue Sauce With A Twist

Lyle was a gourmand cook. He did not work at a cafe, he cooked for himself, friends, and family. He was always attempting to find new recipes to shock and delight the people around him, so he watched each cooking show on {TV|the T. V. Television, taking notes, and making plans. One evening, on one of his favourite shows, the cook went on about Tennessee barbecue sauce, so Lyle made a decision to try it. Unfortunately, he just couldn't get it right, so he decided to go to the source. He investigated Tennessee barbecue sauce, and found there was one restaurant that was legendary for their barbecue sauce, in Tennessee naturally, so he scheduled a flight. He was fairly certain the restaurant would not give him the recipe, but he knew if he could taste it, he could make it.

He was extraordinarily slow and careful in the shower, packed a carry-on bag, and called a taxi. Sadly, as he stepped from curb to taxi, the taxi lurched forward, and he broke his ankle.

Florida and Barbecue Sauce

It was just before school break, and my roommate and I were comming up with some plans for a trip to Florida. It was set, we were good to go, however as normal, we didn't have any cash. This situation hadn't stopped us before, however irrespective of what we tried, we couldn't raise any cash. We were explaining our dilemma to my big sister, who had stopped by for a visit before she left for Vail, and she had an idea.

Her latest flame had been gloating about some type of barbecue sauce he had on a recent visit to Daytona. It was made with mustard, molasses and some secret spices, or so he said, but you could only get it at some out-of-the-way tiny dive between Daytona and Cocoa Beach. Sis was pretty sure her partner would spring for the trip, if we would bring some of that gourmet barbecue sauce with us.
We traveled straight through to Florida, and were on the beach the following morning. Then I remembered the barbecue sauce. We didn't have it, we hadn't even looked for that obscure little dive, and, we had sufficient money to get back to school, if we were lucky, and our car would coast a little .

The Barbecue In Barbecue Sauce Part 1

Barbecue is a particularly western ritual. Though there are variations on the theme worldwide the preoccupation with summer barbecue seems to be a truly American (both North and South) pastime. It is hard to imagine going to a picnic, a family reunion, a church gathering, or even a county fair without imagining the smell of meat mixed with smoke and some type of barbecue sauce.

The general consensus is that the term barbecue (or barbeque) derives from a group of people called the Taino in the Caribbean, who called their version "barbacoa", meaning "sacred fire pit." The Taino dug a pit and placed a pot on the bottom to catch the dripping juices of the meat that cooked above it. Coals and leaves of the maguey tree were then lit and a couple of hours later, there would be a great feast. Sounds something like your backyard last weekend, doesn't it?

This was a long-standing tradition which was met with great approval by the European explorers who did not know how to barbecue and found this, among other truly American specialties like sugar, rum and tobacco, to be a wonderfully satisfying experience. As the settlers began to move northward from the Caribbean to the mainland US they took this cooking style with them. It is notable that for quite a long time barbecue and barbecue sauce was a uniquely "Southern" experience, likely born of the proximity to the islands of the Caribbean.
