While many people think they really know how to grill like the masters and how to properly use that barbecue sauce in their hand, the fact is that more often than not people do not grill properly. While it is true that the most common backyard grilling technique seems to attempt to follow the Kansas City style barbecue, people still misuse the sauce even in this simple grilling style. Worse than that, those who try and duplicate a more intense grilling style like a slow roasted Memphis grilling with a dry rub often are so far from the right technique that it cannot even be classified as the same thing.
The biggest mistake most rookies of grilling make is temperature. They not only are premature with their use of their barbecue sauce, but they either have too many coals in use, don't know how to cool them down, or simply do not notice that they are about to place their expensive steaks onto something that resembles the surface of the sun. Also, understanding basic concepts, like how long a hot dog will take on the grill versus a roast might be a good thing. Dropping a poor hot dog, or god forbid a nice bratwurst onto this solar fire is just a waste of good food as it shrivels and turns into something closer to jerky than dinner. Cooling off your coals by adding the lid and venting the airflow is a simple thing to do that will win you favor amongst those who will be eating your food later on.

How To Pick The Right Barbecue Sauce For Your Tastes
Have you ever been to the grocery store and wanted to pick out just the right barbecue sauce for that cookout you were planning? It can be a daunting task sometimes when you start looking at all the various brands, flavors, types or sauces, and variety of needs for different meats. There are some simple rules of thumb to follow in helping you guide your way through this minefield of the grilling world. In basic terms, know your meat, know what you or your guests like, and know your limitations by either your skill level or your time constraints. These three factors will help lead you into a great cookout experience.
The first thing to know before you choose a barbecue sauce is to plan your menu and know what type of meat you will be grilling. Beef, pork, chicken, and even fish can all be a great dish served off of the grill, but if you use the wrong sauce for a certain cut of meat, you can ruin your meal. Beef usually requires a heavy sauce, often hickory smoked or molasses based, and can often have an added element such as pepper or onion. You normally want to avoid using hickory smoke sauces on traditionally lighter foods such as poultry or fish. With these cuts of meat you may try a lighter citrus based sauce such as lime or even Hawaiian or Teriyaki sauces that are sweeter.

Barbecue Sauce, The American Way
While Mexico has its salsa, and Italy has the claim to fame for the marinara sauce, barbecue sauce is clearly known as American. Whether it is an old tribute to the American West and all its folklore, or a rich southern tradition, no other country can truly stake claim to this delightful masterpiece. In all its glory and varieties, there are very few who do not indulge in using this concoction in some form in America.
The standard is most often the Kansas City style barbecue sauce with a rich tomato base and often very sweet. But this type of grilling is only one type of use as there are as many sauces as there are people it seems. Slow roasting with dry rubs, tangy or tropical style sauces, and even light sauces used for vegetables can be found in our great nation. Sauces for fish, chicken, pork or beef are all distinct in their own ways, and the options are endless.

A Little Or A Lot, Sweet Or Not, What Is Your Barbecue Sauce Style?
Grilling in America, and around the world has developed into not just something for the low brow Neanderthal anymore, but is now an art form. In this newly developed science of grilling, so has the evolution of the barbecue sauce. Not just the generic tomato and sugar based stuff dumped on a hotdog, but a multitude of blends, flavors, and styles created by culinary heavyweights. So, with all of that said, what is your sauce style and how do you do make it work for you?
Some like that barbecue sauce slathered on thick, dripping off every bite of meat, causing the need for a new wardrobe after every cookout. These types are the ones who often are big eaters, love their ribs, and could care less about appearances, especially at a cookout. When these guys are eating the best thing to do is stay out of the way or you might get bit!
There are those folks who prefer a more refined barbecue sauce experience as they brush on a light coat of their favorite sauce. These are usually the types who will still eat with a knife and fork, even at the cookout. They may like to sip wine as well with their fish or chicken that has been grilled.

Barbecue Sauce: Which Type Is Best For You?
When choosing a barbecue sauce
there are many aspects to consider. First, what flavor of sauce do you prefer? There are spicy sauces, tangy sauces, smokey, molasses flavors, onion, hawaiian, red pepper, and hickory flavor among many others. All sauces have their own unique twang and can come in many different varieties. Often times it is also a god choice to do some sauce mixing of your own every once in a while.
Barbecue sauce can have any number of different things in it, here is generally ketchup, worcestershire sauce, vinegar, onion, and mustard or mustard powder as a base. Some barbecue sauce creators smoke their sauces or cook
them in large covered barbecues for a specific amount of time. Also the type of coals, burquettes, or propane used can be unique to the bbq sauce. This is a minute detail, but those who are loyal to one method swear by it and say that the other ways make a difference in the flavor of the meat. Some barbecue sauces are made specially for one method or another.

So What's With Barbecue Sauce Competitions Anyways?
In the south they take barbecue sauce very seriously. So seriously in fact that there are national competitions held annually to see who has the best of the best when it comes to barbecue sauce and grilling. From different kinds of meant like pork, ham, turkey, chicken, and steak, to different kinds of homemade sauces, like smoked, honey, jalapeno, guava and classic are just a few of the sauces that are used.
These competitions attract competitors who have been doing this for years, new to the game but thing they have something to offer or old timers who each defeat going home to perfect their sauce for another year. A little of this and a little of that, year after year. Some competitors are even second and third generation bbq sauce creators.
There is even a National Barbecue Association that hosts competitions, gives advice to sauces, and is on the up and up of the barbecue world. With so much jazz there must be something worth while when it comes to this condiment.

Barbecue Sauce: A Sauce Or A Condiment?
What exactly is the difference between a sauce and a condiment? We may often use the words interchangeably, but the truth is, in the culinary world there is a vast difference. A sauce is a part of a meal, and included in the recipe. A sauce can often times be the main aspect of the meal and give it the kick that will differentiate between average and culinary genius. A condiment is an after the fact aspect and is served to you as an optional compliment to the meal.
Many high end established chefs take condiments as an insult to the meal they have prepared and restaurants owned by these top of the line chefs will rarely even have condiments in their establishment.
So then, the question arises, is bbq sauce a sauce or a condiment? Well for starters is does have the word sauce in its title giving way to the fact that it is intended to be used as a sauce. All to often though it is continually used as a condiment, a compliment to the meal. In reality such a novelty as this should most likely be used as a part of the preparation of the meal. This goes far beyond marinading your ground beef in bbq sauce before you squish it into patties and throw it on the grill. I am talking about using barbecue sauce in some of your more sophisticated dinners and seeing how you like it. I am sure you will be surprised.

Barbecue Sauce: An American Classic
There is nothing like a good barbecue sauce to make or break a summer meal. On a warm sunny afternoon, barbecuing up a nice steak, and you go to the fridge to put the finishing glaze on, if you don't have the best of the best, the whole process could have been in vain.
This is true in any aspect of cooking, but bbq sauce is a special realm of its own. Barbecue sauce is an American specialty, so why settle for the stuff you can get at the grocery store when there are real unique sauces out there that will revolutionize your taste buds? Probably because you are yet to meet these amazing sauces.
A lot goes into bbq sauce, and you want to make sure that all that is going in is of the highest quality available. There are smoky flavors, spicy flavors, sweet flavors, mustardy flavors, and just meat flavors, all though do one thing well, compliment meat. It is very important that your barbecue sauce does just that though, compliments the flavor of the meat and does not drown it or make it taste horrible.

Barbecue Sauce For The British
One of my best friends is English, he lives in Manchester. I met him a few years ago when I was romantically involved with his next door neighbor, a lovely woman, who dumped me flat. He too, had recently become single unexpectedly, and we spent a few days together, in the local pub, feeling sorry for ourselves, drinking and eating. Pub food is not that great, but it must have helped, maybe because it replaced heartbreak, with heartburn. We were having an evening meal of bangers and mash, a particularly heavy concoction of sausage and mashed potatoes, when I remarked that a little barbecue sauce would do our dinner a world of good. He grabbed a bottle of ketchup, and a bottle of Worcestershire sauce, poured a big blob of each on a saucer, mixed them together with a spoon, and presented me a serving of English barbecue sauce.
With the possible exception of a few temperamental British chefs, with American television programs, the Brits just don't know how to make good meals. Baked beans and eggs for breakfast, greasy deep-fried fish and potatoes, for lunch, the aforementioned bangers and mash for dinner, and maybe some spotted dick, which isn't as bad as it sounds, but isn't really good either, seem to be the highlights of the English menu. And, a real, hearty, savory barbecue sauce is nowhere to be found. Before I left, I told my friend, if he ever made it to the States, I'd show him a good time and we'd have some genuine barbecue.

Barbecue Sauce Where Did It Come From
No one really knows when, or where, barbecue sauce originated. Although some say Christopher Columbus brought it back from Hispanola in the late 15th century, and it's derived from barbacoa, an Aztec dish, still served in Mexico today on holidays and special occasions, the Chinese and Japanese versions of barbecue sauce predate the Aztecs, and Columbus, by centuries. Most probably, it was invented before recorded history, when our hunter-gatherer ancestors began growing snatch crops, and discovered spices. Where ever and when ever bbq sauce entered culinary history, it has become a staple condiment around the world.
To most North Americans, barbecue sauce is red and sweet, and found on the shelf next to the ketchup. In South America, it's called chimmi-churri, and it's green and chunky. In fact, barbecue sauce comes in a rainbow of colors and flavors. There's a yellow version, with a mustard base, made famous in South Carolina, introduced by German immigrants in the 18th century, in Texas you can find brown bbq sauce, a mix of Hungarian, German, and Mexican influences. In certain parts of Alabama, you can enjoy a white, mayo based sauce. In Tennessee, Jack Daniels Whiskey is a primary ingredient, and, in Louisiana, the home of Cajun cuisine, a variety of spicy peppers are included. In England and Australia, it's simply ketchup and Worcestershire sauce, in Asia, tomato paste and corn syrup are used as a base, and in India, yogurt. Some are thin marinades that soak into the meat, some are thick and gooey, used as a glaze. Around the world, some kind of barbecue sauce is used on a variety of beef, pork, lamb, venison, goat, and poultry dishes.

Barbecue Sauce, An Underestimated Condiment?
Often times when people think of barbecue sauce they fail to understand the possibilities behind it. Barbecue sauce is often underestimated and pushed aside in the condiment world, when in reality it is one of the only condiments that nation competitions are held for and awards are given. Have you ever heard of a ketchup or mayonnaise competition where competitors spend years perfecting their recipes just to have the best condiment that ultimately will just compliment a meal? No, that is because there are not competitions for those condiments, only bbq sauce.
Barbecue sauce has a vast and wide range of possibilities and flexibility. It can be a marinade, a dressing, or an addition to a steak or burger. There are multiple different typed and different flavors, they all have that same underlining kick though that gives it a distinction from others. The problem with the misconceptions of barbecue sauce is the lack of understanding of the vastness of the condiment.

How Many Different Types Of Barbecue Sauce Are There?
There are multiple different types of barbecue sauce, so many that it would probably be impossible to get an accurate number. Instead it is more efficient and comprehensible to classify a few categories that can better describe the many different types. The categories we will use are classic, smoked or hickory, sweet, spicy, teriyaki, alternative, and foreign.
First there is classic bbq sauce. This sauce is normally a mixture of ketchup, mustard powder and Worcestershire, along with a few other ingredients. There is nothing to jazz it up or alter the flavor. This sauce goes best with burgers and food strait off the grill.
The next flavor of barbecue sauce is smoked or hickory. This sauce has an amazing grilled flavor and can be used very efficiently as a grilled alternative. For example you can bake a steak in this sauce or broil burger in the oven and it will still maintain that barbecued flavor.

Barbecue Sauce, Gourmet Or Classic?
Barbecue sauce is often given a bad rap because of the stigma of beer and burgers and white trash. This my be the case with some sauces, but there are also many a gourmet barbecue sauces that will be sure to entice your taste buds galore! Often times it is the ingredients of the sauce that differentiates between good and bad, gourmet and trashy. It is always a good idea to check the ingredients of the sauces you buy to steer clear of the unhealthy and unappetizing sauces. The shorter the ingredient list and the more familiar the words the better the sauce. If the ingredient list has many long words with chemical sounding names, chances are it will not be the best sauce to purchase. Not only are the preservatives bad for you, there are other sauces that will taste better!
Gourmet barbecue sauce is often served on top of a steak when you go to a steak house, however it is not called barbecue sauce. Ingredients such as garlic, butter, pepper, mustard, salt, celery, and Worcestershire will most likely all be substantial additions to the steak sauce and are also the ingredients that make up bbq sauce, what a coincidence. Not really, because these ingredients compliment meat, especially steak, very well. It is just the name barbecue sauce that tends to scare people off.

What Is The Best Barbecue Sauce
My Aunt Lilly is a sweet old lady, and a good cook too, but my brother and I detest to go to her, due to her parrot. She named it after her ex Mike, because he was foul-mouthed, loud, and obnoxious, and the bird is just the same. But she's had that parrot for at least twenty years, and Uncle Mike was only there for 3.
Dinner at Lilly's was always an adventure. Though she was a fantastic cook, and made a killer barbecue sauce, you might never be certain the feathered Mike would leave you alone long enough to eat, because Lilly failed to believe in cages, and Mike had the run of the house. Trying to eat a delectable flavorful wonderful meal with an old, stinky parrot sitting on your head and cawing obscenities, is not my concept of a fine dining experience. But Aunt Lilly loves that bird, and we love Aunt Lilly, so when she invited us over for her mouth watering brisket of meat, smothered in her wonderful barbecue sauce, the positives outweighed the negative, that negative being Mike, so, we went to her place for dinner. I am not sure where she got the recipe for her barbecue sauce, but I have never tasted any sauce as good, anywhere.

A Gift From The Cosmos: Ancient Astronauts And Barbecue Sauce
This article believe it or not is about barbecue sauce. If you watch a lot of cable or satellite tv, you know how many programs there are about ancient civilizations. The art and architecture, customs and taboos, food and drink, tools and utensils of our ancestors are discussed and explained, by numerous experts. Every new archeological discovery on land, or under the sea, is soon common knowledge, thanks to television. If you're a fan of these shows, you can bet that at least one of the explanations, from at least one of the experts, for whatever ancient ruin, monolith, or fossil being discussed, is that it was brought from outer space, by a more advanced civilization.
The pyramids of Egypt and Mexico, the cave drawings in southern France, the stone towers of Stonehenge, the geoglyphs on the Nazca desert in Peru, even the Great Wall of China, have all, at one time or another, been credited to ancient visitors from outer space, so why not barbecue sauce?

A Backyard Party With The Perfect Barbecue Sauce
When lighting up the grill for a backyard BBQ there are always a couple of things that one must have with them to ensure the best time possible. A group of close friends, some good beer, food to grill, and the best of the best when it comes to barbecue sauce. One of the central aspects of having a backyard get together is the food and the method of grilling one uses, so to ensure a conversation starter and an impressed group of friends, the sauce is key. The food will also at one point be the center of the party, so be sure you can be proud of it, and be sure you are throwing away clean plates instead of half of the food you made!
