Barbecue sauce is a flavored liquid sauce also known as a condiment that ranges from watery to thick in consistency and is intended to be used as an accompaniment to barbecued dishes. Although it can be applied to pretty much any food, it is usually used to top off meat after cooking, grilling or baking.
Traditionally speaking, it has been a much favored style of sauce for pork, beef ribs and chicken entrees. It is not used very often for dipping items such as French fries or pizzas.
Bbq sauce recipes come in many different varieties from sweet and sour, spicy, smoky, and tangy. The ingredients vary but most commonly used ones are tomato paste, vinegar, spices and sweeteners. These differences in ingredients and how they are combined is based on the region and tradition that they are from.
